38th Annual General Meeting cum Annual Forum on “Parental Emotion Education – New Driving Force by Multi-disciplinary”
On November 24 2023, we hosted the Annual General Meeting cum ‘’Parental Emotion Education – New Driving Force by Multi-disciplinary‘’. The event was well-attended with a capacity of over 160 participants. We were truly grateful for Ms. Wendy Chau, Assistant Director (Family Welfare) of the Social Welfare Development, who delivered her speech, and presented souvenirs to all the friendly partners of Harmony House, including: Zonta Club of Kowloon, Rotary Club of Wan Chai, Christie's Hong Kong Limited, Love Family Charity, Zonta Club of New Territories Zone II, Taiwan Huixin Technology (Hong Kong) Limited, BIRTHDAY HAPPINESS ASIA、Asia Pacific Soccer School and ENM Holdings Limited. Their generous support to Harmony House in the past year is much appreciated.
During the Annual Forum of Parental Emotion Education – New Driving Force by Multi-disciplinary, we have invited a parent to share her experienced on the stress of educating children; the sharing also covered the anticipation of how could both the community and school support both parents and children when they were facing emotional stress. We have also invited Dr. William Chui, Specialist in Psychiatry, to discourse on the mutual interaction and affection between human brains and emotional behaviour. The topic helped enhanced our knowledge to the mechanism behind our emotions, as well as to understand how to deal with the mechanism of emotions, and further to reach the level of emotional management. Dr. Chui concluded the sharing by explaining both practical and possible methods to prevent and release emotional stress.
Dr. Sandra Tsang, JP, Honorary Associate Professor and Department of Social Work and Administration from the University of Hong Kong, also shared the positive strategies that parents could deploy when handling and managing the development of children with all participants. Dr. Tsang also pointed out the importance of parents to understand the needs of children at different stage, encouraged parents to acquire the knowledge, technique and attitude for parenting and taking care the mental health of themselves and children, which could further enhance harmonious relationships with their children.
Lastly, Principal Mr. Siu Tsz Leung of Lok Sin Tong Yeung Chung Ming Primary School was invited to share the emotional stress faced by the parents and children. Principal Siu advocated the importance of collaboration between parents and school by stating: “First, understand the difficulties that parents are facing. Through school to organize and provide appropriate supporting services for parents so that it would help release the stress parents are encountering when taking care of their children.”
During the open discussion, there were active discussion and sharing, and both keynote speakers and guest comers have mutually influenced and inspired one another with different approaches on parenting and parental emotion education. Hence, it helped demonstrating deeper understanding to the needs of parents and arouse everyone’s awareness of the issue of parental emotion education.
