On the day of the event, we were very honoured to invite workers from the Samaritans to engage in a sharing session with us. The speaker commenced with sharing the thoughts, emotions and behaviours of callers who held a suicidal attempt. This allowed volunteers to distinguish whether the callers intend to harm themselves or commit suicide, and hence could provide proper counselling services. Speakers also shared the skills behind listening and responding, and through role playing sessions, gave volunteers the opportunity to experience the roles and situations. Volunteers soon get to make use of the techniques such as: raising out open-ended questions, short-term encouragement and emotional reflection etc. During the gathering session, volunteers shared their recent developments while making handcrafted soaps, so that they get to understand more about one another. The positive feedback given by the instructor also helped to build a good interaction between volunteers.
