When children are abused or witness intense arguments or even physical fights between family members at home, they are likely to feel deeply anxious and frightened. They worry about the safety of both themselves and the abused family member. Some children may even feel guilty, believing that the violence happened because of them—especially when the conflict involves disagreements over discipline.
Protect children from abuse
Has your child ever...
-
Being beaten or scolded? Pushed or shoved?
-
Being insulted or kicked out of the house?
-
Witnessing family members arguing, shouting at each other, or even fighting?
-
Seeing someone in the family holding a sharp object, standing near a window or balcony?
If violence continues at home, it can cause serious emotional distress to children.
Some children become overly alert, constantly feeling fear, anxiety, sadness, and anger. They may be restless, unable to concentrate, and feel extremely uneasy about even the smallest changes at home.
Others may emotionally shut down, becoming numb and unresponsive to everything around them, suppressing their feelings as a way to protect themselves.Long-term emotional distress can severely impact a child’s psychological development.
This includes low self-esteem, poor social skills, and in some cases, the development of violent or criminal behavior, or even post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
